MTSM Hosts Sacred Music Workshop
07.24.20Mount St. Mary’s Seminary & School of Theology (MTSM) hosted a one-day workshop of continuing education in the field of sacred music yesterday on campus.
The workshop is geared towards those who are responsible for forming music programs in Catholic churches such as parish directors of music and pastors. More than 50 people from the Archdiocese of Cincinnati were in attendance. The day included liturgical prayer and opportunities for networking among those in the sacred music world.
Fr. Paul Jerome Keller, O.P., S.T.D., MTSM Professor of Sacramental & Liturgical Theology, was the keynote speaker. Other speakers included Catherine Fishlock, Director of Music at St. Gertrude Parish in Cincinnati; Dr. Mary Catherine Levri, Director of Music at MTSM; Fr. Andrew Moss Professor of Canon Law at MTSM; and Fr. Ryan Ruiz, Dean of the School of Theology, Director of Liturgy and Assistant Professor of Liturgy & Sacraments at MTSM.
“The theme of this year’s workshop was Sacred Music and the Eucharist,” said Dr. Levri. “Fr. Keller is a seasoned academic in the area of sacramental theology and has compiled a beautiful book of meditations on the Eucharist so he was the perfect choice for our keynote speaker this year.”
Planning for next year’s event is already underway. Dr. Levri explained that MTSM will expand the workshop into a 3-day conference to attract a larger audience from the Midwest region, including dioceses in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee.
“Our conference staff will also grow to include speakers of national acclaim and sacred musicians who hold significant positions in churches and cathedrals throughout the country,” said Dr. Levri. “Our goal is for this conference to be ‘the event’ for sacred musicians and priests to attend each year.”
MTSM is the Archdiocese of Cincinnati’s graduate-level Catholic Seminary and School of Theology with nearly 300 full and part-time students. Founded in 1829, our 75-acre campus provides preparation for ordination to the priesthood and permanent diaconate as part of Mount St. Mary’s Seminary.
