Real Men Real Faith: Father and Son Day of Service09.29.17
On Saturday, September 23rd, we had 18 fathers and their sons gather at the seminary for a day filled with prayer, work (and sweating in the heat) and a call to discern either spiritual or biological fatherhood at the Real Men Real Faith: Father and Son Day of Service sponsored by the Mount St. Mary’s Knights of Columbus Council. The Council began this event in the spring of 2016 as a way to encourage and embolden fathers to grow in their relationship with their sons through praying and working side-by-side.
Study after study shows that it is the faith of the father that increases the likelihood that their children will maintain the Catholic faith into adulthood. Simply put, we wanted to give an opportunity for fathers to share their love of Jesus Christ and His Bride, the Church, with their sons! It is a day that Catholic men can be men with other Catholic men. One of the fathers, Chris, sums it up well, “I chose to attend this with my sons as I see it as a great opportunity to spend time with them in worship and service and also to introduce them to the seminarians as I encourage them to explore their vocations.”
We began the day in the most perfect and manliest of ways by Mass. Nothing is more masculine than worshiping and loving our God. From there, the fathers, sons, and a slew of seminarians cleared a vast section of honeysuckle off of the property. After lunch, Mr. Willig and his son, Deacon Jacob Willig, gave an inspiring talk about Catholic men needing to ‘be champions’ in every moment of every day. Later, we explored our competitive side with a short (it was nearly 90 degrees outside!) game of ultimate Frisbee. Lastly, we concluded the day by praying a Rosary on the grounds of the Athenaeum to implore our Mother’s help to be better men and fathers through obediently following Jesus Christ’s will for us—whether that be is a call to be spiritual fathers through the Priesthood or biological fathers through Marriage.
Thanks to all who joined us, it was a fantastic day! In fact, another father, Mike, described the day, “[It] was super to bring fathers and sons together with seminarians to praise God, work hard, and have fellowship.” We will keep you posted about next year’s Real Men Real Faith: Father and Son Day of Service! Please consider joining us next year!
