Academic Programs

Authorization

The Athenaeum of Ohio was incorporated in the State of Ohio on March 24, 1928. The institution is authorized to grant Master of Divinity and Master of Arts degrees by the Ohio Board of Regents. Authorization continues through December 31, 2024.

Approval of programs

All recommendations for new degree and certificate programs are submitted for review and approval to the Educational Affairs Committee of the Faculty Senate, the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees, and to Board of Trustees at large. Once approved internally, the institution notifies its accreditors of the proposal and provides the necessary petitions and documentation. Degree programs are offered contingent on approval by both the Association of Theological Schools and the Higher Learning Commission.

Programs and review

The Athenaeum of Ohio offers five master’s degree programs. Two are professional degrees, the Master of Divinity (MDiv) and the Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry (MAPM), that include formation components designed to prepare students for ordained or lay ministry. The other three degrees are the Master of Arts (Theology) (MAT), Master of Arts (Biblical Studies) (MAB), and Master of Arts (Catholic Studies) (MACS).

The curriculum for each degree is regularly reviewed by members of the Senate Educational Affairs Committee, which includes the dean of the School of Theology, the dean of the seminary, the director of lay ecclesial formation, the registrar and director of assessment, the library director, two student representatives, and elected faculty. Further review and oversight comes from the Board of Trustees Academic Affairs Committee, which includes the dean of the Athenaeum, the dean of the School of Theology, the director of lay ecclesial formation, the registrar and director of assessment, members of the Board of Trustees, and community stakeholders with business, finance, human resources, education, or leadership expertise.

Non-degree programs

The Athenaeum offers multiple non-degree programs, including the Certificate in Catholic Theology and the Certificate in Pastoral Ministry (both taught at the undergraduate level), as well as the Graduate Certificate in Catholic Theology and the Graduate Certificate in Pastoral Ministry. The two graduate certificates each satisfy partial requirements for the Master of Arts (Theology) (MAT) and the Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry (MAPM).
