Soldiers of the Cross Contains New Insights
11.14.19
Father Endres, Ph.d, Dean of Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, and Dr. William Kurtz of the University of Virginia, debuted their new book, Soldiers of the Cross: Catholic Priests and Sisters in the Civil War, before a packed Barlett Center of more than 200 people on September 16.
The book is a long-forgotten account of the war that offers the fullest record of the Catholic Church’s involvement in the conflict.
Composed at the close of the war, but never before published, it contains new insights into the service of Catholic priest chaplains and sister nurses, helping to widen our understanding of American Catholic history. This is the first collaboration between Fr. Endres and Dr. Kurtz, who serves as the managing director of the John L. Nau III Center for Civil War History at UVA.
